Rigging Info Part 2 — Biped Settings & Mirroring

Download Markdown

Summary: After Rig Structure and FBX in Part 1, Biped Settings must be saved so BipedPlus Ani Utils Reset and Mirror work. Fast-Ref almost never uses this tab.

1. What Biped Settings Are

Biped Settings store extra base Biped data on the Rigging Info node.

Tool Use
Fast-Ref Rarely used
BipedPlus Ani Utils Required — Reset All / Mirror

Those features need this data saved. Most other fields save automatically. The hard part is mirror setup.

2. Prerequisite — Local Matrix & Hierarchy

Pose Factor assumes you know local matrix, local pose, and rotation.

→ 3ds Max rigging | Local Matrix & Hierarchy

3. How Pose Factor Mirrors

Pick a controller and mirror. It matches a source and the opposite side follows.

mirror result = controller local pose × Pose Factor

You can read the local values in the UI. (The English option name is Parent.)

Example: XYZ all +1 copies as-is. If Z is -1, lifting +5 on one side becomes -5 on the other after mirror.

Rotation Factor and Parent Factor work the same way. Parent looks like a simpler rotation.

4. Why It Is Not Fully Automatic

3ds Max has Biped mirror, but a fully automatic bone-mirror script is hard.

Every rigger / character TA picks a different front axis (X vs Y) and whether Z is flipped. Rules differ by shop, so the practical choice was to let you set Pose Factor / Rotation Factor.

A BipedPlus-built rig already has these values. You do not need to set them by hand.

5. No Mirror · L/R · Center

To keep an extra controller (for example a sleeve) out of mirror, set No Mirror and save.

Also built in:

  • Left / Right name rules find the opposite controller
  • Position-based matching if names do not follow the rule
  • Center controllers have no pair; mirror flips left/right
  • Settings can be exported / imported

6. Save Update and Default Pose

Run Save Update to store the data.

Even if the pose has moved, Reset returns to the Default Pose stored on the Rigging Info node.

In One Line

That is the whole idea. It only feels hard at first. Mirror automation is still being improved; until then, treat Factor this way.
